A Piece of History – Chethams Library

Who knew we had so much history all around us in Manchester and the wider Greater Manchester County. Lots of folk post pictures of the Northern Quarter, or Castlefields but there is so much more history hidden in plain sight.

I’ve visited and photographed The John Rylanss Library, which is an amazing place, but the Chethams Library has been on my bucket list for a good while now.

It is a working school, Chethams School of Music and Scholars can board, as well as still being a working library, albeit primary for scholars of history etc.

Unlike The John Rylands Library you have to book on a tour. I booked onto one of these and whilst it was fabulous I would have preferred to wander round under my own steam. Sadly that’s not allowed so I took the next best option. There were 15 participants on the tour including me. This made it a little difficult to frame up images with people wandering around. I made the best of it.

The guide was an incredibly knowledgable, articulate and amusing and a showed us around the parts where visitors are allowed. There is so much history in this set of buildings and wider location.

Having completed this visit and subsequent editing and posting of some of these images, one of the colleagues in OneLandscape group gave me an idea that I hope to flesh out into a wider history project but focusing on the Libraries in and around Greater Manchester.

All these images were taken on my Leica Q3, hand held and edited in Lightroom.

  1. I would like to have something like this as my home library 😀. Seriously, I would love to wander around and browsing the books. I think you managed to capture the mood of the place in some very nice photos.

Thanks Jan Erik, you have to make an appointment to look at the books and you have to join a guided tour to just visit. I don’t realise it’s one of the oldest buildings in Manchester.
