For those who are regular readers of my blog you will remember I went up to The Lake District in early October for 4 photo shoots over 3 days, 2 sunrise and 2 sunsets. I had a fabulous time whilst I was there and learned a significant amount in the process. I was invited by Chris Sale, to be part of a documentary that was being filmed by Julian Baird.
The idea was that Julian would shoot a typical day in the life of a professional landscape photographer, get all the guts and glory, early starts and late finishes all documented. Of course a main function of Chris’s professional landscape photography business is to teach and educate both in terms of Photography but also about the Lake District itself.
My involvement was to be the client in the 121 session. Which of course is true because I have been on three 121 sessions with Chris as well as attending one of his workshops. The footage of me in the clip explains why I chose Chris as the professional I would sign up to for that first workshop. Click the link below and it will take you to YouTube to watch the full documentary in all its glory.

My starring role in this starts around 7 minutes 40 seconds, so if you just want to see and hear (OMG) me skip to that bit of the clip. I wouldn’t do that if I was you through, I would watch the whole thing. It really is very good and a testament to Julian’s film making skills and Chris’s abilities as a photographer and presenter. To be fair both Chris and Julian have been running their own Youtube channels for 3 or 4 years so they both should be (and are) very confident in front of the camera.
I’m sure there is a lot of footage that did not make the final cut as Julian seemed to be pointing his camera at Chris and at me, to a lesser extent me, for the whole of the weekend. It looks effortless when you see the final product, the videos flow and I think are thoroughly enjoyable. That does not show the amount of effort, planning and execution that goes into making a Youtube video. In some cases there are scenes to rival Elton John in his documentary.
Below are two of the images that I captured on the 121 session that you see in the video and I am really pleased with them. The 121 session was held on the beach at the north end of Thirlmere Reservoir, not far from Keswick. Once the lockdown and the virus is more under control and we can get out and about I will be exploring this area again. This will include hiking up Raven Crag which we decided not to do due to the inclement weather.
I hope you enjoy the Youtube video and the images I took during the session.

Well that was great watching you with Chris, and also telling Julian about how much you feel youve learned with Chris.
Thank you, I enjoyed it š
Hey Stephen
Thank you so much for your kind words on my documentary! You are indeed right that there is a lot of footage on the cutting room floor. The film could have easily been over an hour! š
Thanks again also for willing to participate in the film. It was really good to feature one of Chris’ clients.
The documentary is doing really well (including some traffic coming from here). I might have to do another!
Lovely pictures from that morning and I hope to see you again on another shoot soon.
Cheers, and thanks again for your kind words.
Jules
Jules, it was my pleasure. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and Iām looking forward to another shoot in the near future. Stephen
