Victoria Bay Jetty, Derwentwater

Hello there, and welcome.

Welcome to my website, and more importantly welcome to my first ever blog posting here on my site. I’ve had a keen interest in photography for years and years but its only recently that I’ve had the time to be able to devote to photography and I have to say its become a real passion of mine.

I’ve always enjoyed the great outdoors, and would much rather be out and about, than sat at home, but like everyone from time to time we have to be indoors and like nothing more than looking at my catalogue of images, as well as editing the better images that i’ve taken. I decided that if i was going to be serious about photography then i needed to move on from taking images on my trusty iPhone and invested in a DSLR. I thoroughly enjoyed using that but soon discovered that the world camera “gear” is varied and voluminous. Anyway long story short i am now a fully paid up member of the mirrorless club and i now take my images with a Sony A7 iii, I bloody love it.

A Day out at a Lake District Workshop

It seemed to me the best thing to do to improve my images quickly was to get some proper advice and decided that a workshop was the best pace to start, and i was not wrong. I’d watched Youtube quite a lot and was drawn to Chris Sale who offers workshops as part of his catalogue of teaching, and i signed up for a day workshop in the Lake District. Well it was a revelation, on a number of fronts, firstly Chris is a great teacher and i learned a lot, secondly, i realised that the Lake District is a great place to visit to take photographs, and thirdly, i was hooked.

The images here are the results of the workshop and where taken around Derwentwater, near Keswick. The workshop was ideal for me, there was myself and one other attendee, who was an experienced photographer who wanted tips on Landscapes. Chris was more than able to give both novice (me) and experienced photographer lots of tips and we both found the workshop a real valuable experience. I will be enrolling on another of Chris’s events in due course.

The Jetty is a great place to capture a long exposure image, as there is a water, and sky, alongside the Jetty itself. Who would have thought that a large chuck of driftwood wood provide such a great bit of foreground interest for photographs but it certainly does. Derwentwater has a lot of bays and inlets where you can capture great views.

There is such a lot to see and its easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of photo opportunities that the Lake District offers. So the plan for the near future (whenever lockdown allows) is to spend time in and around the Lake District capturing landscape photographs. This will be supplemented by walks around other great North West locations, Peak District, and the Coastline being the obvious choices.
