Views of Arnside

This past weekend I have had a lovely trip to Grange over Sands in Cumbria. On the way up we decided to stop off at Arnside which in reality is quite close to Grange over Sands, but as the crow flies isn’t always the way to get from one place to the other. Arnside and Grange stand on opposite sides of the River Kent that runs out into Morecambe Bay. I have been to Arnside once before butI stuck to the town and didn’t really venture very far afield.

This time we were adamant that we should explore a little, and this photo montage is the results of the walk around, which included Arnside Knott and Arnside Tower as well as the pier and other parts of the village.

The Viewing Point – Arnside Knott. You get a real sense of the wider area from this spot and the plates on the stones identify all the places of interest across the estuary and on into the fells of The Lake District.
Nice Light and Interesting shapes in the Estuary. The sands of the estuary and the wider Morecambe Bay are notorious for shifting and catching walkers off guard. It does make for some good shapes though.
Arnside Tower – It’s in a farmer’s field!
Not exactly five star luxury!
Arnside Pier has seen better days!! These wooden stakes are all that remain of the original pier at Arnside. The new pier is a very substantial construction and given the strength of the tides it doesn’t surprise me that it was constructed in this way. This composition would look really good with a sky thats lit up with some gorgeous light, maybe another time.
I didn’t miss the ferry!!
The River Kent with Arnside Knott in the distance.

This was my first chance to try out my new 24 to 70 f2.8 GM lens, which I traded my 24 to 105 f4 G lens for. Paired with my Alpha 7 IV body this lens is the real deal, and I’m really pleased with these results. These are all hand held images and effectively were taken as we walked around the area. I really enjoy documenting in this way and whilst none of these are portfolio images it allowed me to get used to the new camera and lens combo, and to find compositions that maybe photographed in future visits with my full pack of gear, including tripod etc.

Thanks Les, there will definitely be a return to that spot to try to get a moody sky or a lovely sunset.
