The Broken Road

This months photography challenge in the coaching group I’m in is about telling a story with an image. This week I went out with the intention of capturing an image that tells a story. It’s a while since ive been into the Peak District, so I thought it would be a good place to make a start on the challenge. The following images are all images of the Broken Road, which was originally the main thoroughfare between Sheffield and Chapel-in-le-frith, and onto Manchester. The Peak District has unique challenges for road builders of yesteryear, in that there are deep valleys and lots of steep hills. In addition the is a history of land slips in this area, over a long period of time and add in lots of inclement weather that test any roads built.

The first 4 images show the road from different perspectives with the final image being the one that I feel best represents the story in a single image.

This image shows the bad state of the road on the relatively flat part of the road which is just above Castleton, you can see the cement works in the distance that locates the image.

This image shows the the state of the road effectively looking the opposite way from the previous image. You can see Man Tor and the Great Ridge in the background, that shows just how high the road needed to be.

This image is taken from the top section of the road, I parked up about 200 yards from this spot in the car park that has been made for cars wanting to explore this area. You can see here the the serious damage that has been done to the road over the years and the slip of the land that has occurred. This road hasn’t been used since around 1979, by vehicles, as this is just a walkers route only as you can see from the walkers in this image.\

A story in one image – Portrait

This image I feel does tell a story in one image, but my only thought about this is whether it’s better in portrait or landscape. This is the portrait version.

A story in one image – landscape

This is largely the same scene but taken in landscape orientation, this is my favourite version and the one that I feel will be submitted to the group for consideration in this months challenge.

All these images where taken with my Sony Alpha 7iv, with the 24 to 70 f2.8 GM lens, all on a Benro tripod with a bento geared head.
