River Mersey Project – An Update

For those who are regular readers you will be aware that my project for 2024 is photographing a section of the River Mersey from (almost) Stockport Town Centre, to the bridge on Manchester Road at Parrswood. There are other blog posts with updates on this already, but I thought an update might be a good idea.

A few weeks ago I traded in my Sony A6600 crop sensor camera and a few lenses for a Fuji XT-5 and a few lenses, I am quite taken with the Fuji film simulations and the retro approach that the XT-5 has. To get used to using this I walked along the River Mersey a few times, taking images as tests of the camera and of locations. Whilst reviewing the test images I came across a location that I decided I would look to see if I could get some images with better light. One night last week the forecast was for a decent sunset, so I packed my Sony A7IV and lenses and went to see if I could take advantage of the sunset and capture some images.

What attracted me to this spot was the fact that there is a Tesco trolley very rusty one at that) half in the water and half on the small beach at this spot. These are the results of the shoot from the evening last week.

Backlit view along the River towards the town centre.

View towards Parrswood, with the sun directly shining onto the scene.

Whilst on my way to the location, I had spotted a number of “man made” items that are dotted along the walkway. I have included images of these “nuts” before but I wanted to get a better image with my full kit. I like the composition of this image. It was taken using my 24 to 70 f2.8 GM lens at 24mm. It’s up close and personal with the sculptures but you get a sense of their position on the river and the walkway from this image.

‘m really liking the way this project is shaping up now and there are a variety of images that I have and plan to shoot, that I’m hoping will end up being within the final output for this project. I’m planning that this will be a photobook. More on that when the plans take shape.
