Revisiting Old Locations

This week I decided to revisit two locations that I have been to before, the first one was entirely because I couldn’t decided where to go. I headed off south and ended up at The Roaches. Today was absolutely where I intended, I had a walk onto Knowl Hill and a look at the wind turbines.

The Roaches Barm

The Roaches is a rocky location in Staffordshire, and is a few miles from Leek. I had it in my mind that I would have lunch at the Tea Rooms but sadly it doesn’t open on a Tuesday. A trip to Sainsbury’s meant I wasn’t going to go hungry, and I sat and ate my lunch looking down from the lay-by just below the Roaches. What I was looking to photograph was the derelict barn at Roaches End. That was a walk away, as I deliberately parked the car so I had to walk, got to get the steps in!!

I would say this is the classic view of the Barn, with the wall providing the leading line, to both the Barn and the big tree. This is positioned looking downwards from above the barn, as has a good view of the wider setting. To be fair the light wasn’t the greatest without any real definition in the clouds. I do like this composition but it needs better light.

This angle gives a better view the actual barn and a real sense of how derelict it really is.

I did take images from various different locations around the barn, and spotted this gap in the stone wall as I photographed the barn from below. I nipped over the wall and with the help of my iPhone I decided that the barn would fit into the gap created by the wall collapsing for some reason. I do like this composition and again it needs some better light.

These images were all taken on my Fuji XT-5 with the 10 to 18 Sigma lens, all on my Corey 3 legged thing travel tripod.

Knowl Hill

To be fair today isn’t exclusively a photography day, it was a day looking after Charlie, as Tracey is away for the day with her friends. Given it was a nice day and dry and not overly hot I decided that a walk on the hills was in order. The Leica Q3 came with me as it’s easy to carry and has great image quality. I have been here before and tried to take images that are a little different than I’ve previously done. Here they are.

I has it in my head that there was a ramshackle gate at some point on the walk and that would be a good bit of foreground interest. I do like this composition but again some decent light is required.

Not far from the gate in the previous image, is the wall and fence you can see in this image. We did have to walk “off piste” to get to this spot, and its a shame that you cant really see the full extent of the turbine in the distance.

If you’ve ever been near this sort of wind turbine you will know that they make a few noises. To be fair I find them quite eerie, and whilst the rational part of my brain knows the blades are high above my head, the irrational brain wont let me walk anywhere near. So this is about as near as I got. Well maybe a little nearer but clearly my nervousness got the better of me as the images I took are poor.

These images are all taken on my Leica Q3, handheld.
