I’ve always had a love for history, and i’ve always loved having days out to visit the wonderful historical buildings that we have in the UK. I was lucky as a child as my parents where always able to take me and my brothers and sister away on holidays and this usually involved visiting a castle or a steely home. This love of historical buildings is something that i’ve carried through into my adult years, and having a son was a great excuse to carry on with this love affair. I think every holiday I’ve ever had invariably ends up in my history fix being met, and in later life i’ve carried this on. I’m now a member of The National Trust, English Heritage as well as Historical Houses, and I use these memberships to their fullest advantage. The History section of my website features some of my favourite images of historical sites and buildings and i will refresh and add to these over time as my photography develops over the coming years.
Whitby Abbey
The North Yorkshire coastline is a great place to visit, with its quaint coves as well as seaside resorts, there’s lots to see and do, and that includes lots of historical buildings. My trip to Whitby Abbey was on an overcast day in October, but thankfully the rain held off and I was able to spend some time exploring this magical place. The image featured was taken handheld as really wasn’t expecting to get the chance to take any images as the visit was a little bit impromptu, but it was worth it as i got some lovely moody images of this wonderful site.
Stockport Plaza
I’ve lived in Stockport for quite a lot of years and I must have walked past the Plaza on numerous occasions and never really took much notice of its splendour as an Art Decor building. To be fair the owners have done a great job with marketing the building and facilities it offers and regularly there are musical events, plays and other such things advertised in the local press. The image here was taken on a Saturday evening in December 2019, I was at a loose end as a friend who I was supposed to meet up with for a drink was poorly, so I thought rather than waste the time I would have a quick walk round the town centre before the majority of the punters come out for the evening. I really like the colour of this picture and the angle (i hope) conveys the stature of such an iconic building.
St Mary’s Church
Unusually for me i finished work for Christmas 2019, on the Thursday (as Christmas day was the following Tuesday) so i had a few days to get the Christmas festivities arranged and do all the shopping ready for the big day at my house. On the morning of Christmas Eve I finished all of the tasks I’d set myself and decided to have a quick drive into “leafy” cheshire to see what I could find. On way way home I saw the sign for this church and decided to go see what it looked like as i’d never seen it before. To my surprise i found a wonderful quaint old church, set in some lovely grounds, and this image is one of my favourites from my shoot in and around the church that day.
Places to Visit?
I’m always on the lookout for some good locations to go and shoot, and whilst the memberships I have and my knowledge of the local area will be fruitful in giving me lots of opportunities, any recommendations that you might have are all gratefully received. Please feel free to get in touch and let me know of any places that you’d recommend that I go visit in the coming months and years.
