For those who have read the first two parts of this trilogy will know that the third part of the 121 sessions with Chris Sale was planned to be a walk around Lowther Estate. The idea was that this would allow me to practise telling the “story” of a place, without having to scale any real height. This was, after all, the afternoon following our ascent up through the Nan Field Pass and onto Harter Fell. I was glad that it didn’t involve going up any hills. These images are meant as a short pectoral essay of what its like to explore the Lowther Estate and the various sights it has to offer. All the shots are hand held with my Sony Alpha 7 IV with my 24 to 104mm f4 G lens.

The church of St Michaels stands on the Lowther Estate and sections of the church date back to 1686. There are views over the River Lowther and lovely walks around the buildings.

The Low Gardens Bridge stands across the River Lowther, but also has a new (not so new) addition. The stone bridge is a grade II listed building.

Lowther Castle stands in a vast estate with rolling countryside all around. There are a number of gardens that have been developed over time and these sit alongside the the more rustic countryside of the wider estate.

The castle is mainly ruins at this point but there have been some refurbishments that are open to the public, along with a cafe.

It’s well worth a walk around the castle walls, and the late afternoon light cast some great shadows that make a great contrast against the walls.
