Fuerteventura April / May 2025

This trip to Fuerteventura has been booked for at least 6 if not 9 months. It was a dad and son holiday, just to spend time together. When I decided to retire this seemed like a nice bookend to my working life and I could spend it relaxing and decompressing, and thats exactly what we did. I made the decision a while ago that I would travel light when I go on holiday, in respect of camera gear. It’s bad enough carrying luggage without adding lots of weight and bulk with camera gear. Besides I do have some good quality travel cameras and decided to take my Fuji X100V, it’s small and compact but takes some great images. I was really pleased with the images I took in Corfu last year so had no reservations this time. So it proved to be the case again this time.

Fuertevantura is a great places for a landscape photographer, if you know her and when to go out. I decided that I wasn’t going to plan any photography trips but I did have it in my mind to get out a few times in the area near the hotel to see what I could capture. These are a selection of the images that I took. I have a lot of other iPhone images that I took but these are mainly family type images.

I have been to this island before but that was 15 years ago. I have found memories of the beach here but I don’t remember these lifeguard stations. I think these look great

I took a walk onto the beach from the hotel and whilst this beach is mainly sandy. I spotted this clump of rocks as I walked along the beach, and thought there may be an image here somewhere. Whilst not the best shot of the holiday I do like the flow of the rocks which is mirrored by the shallow pool of water alongside it.

What I do remember about this beach is the toilet blocks. This is because when we came previously there were beach bars, dotted all along this beach and if you needed to use the facilities they were on hand. Sadly the beach bars have all disappeared as the hotels have all adopted the all inclusive approach which means visitors wont spend money on the beach when they can get it for free a few hundred yards away. Shame really.

Out of the back of the hotel you could see lots of rolling rocky hills as well as lots of scrub lands. They do like the palm trees here in the Canary Islands, and this fine group were along one of the roads not far from the back of the hotel. I do like how they take your eye through the image, along with there shape and colour.

I have to say the road network on Furteventura is really rather good, and whilst this image mainly features a disused road you can see the main road as its cuts through the image. I like the sweep of the barrier that heads off towards the hills but I also love the light on the hills in the background.

It was an incredibly light and sunny morning when I was walking around, and I was taken by the framing of the trees with the hotel we stayed in just in the background. In keeping with my recent approach I thought I’d see what this would look like processed as a B&W image, I think it works well even if the composition could have been a little better.

My brother in law and a few friends were also on holiday on Fuerteventura at the same time as us, and we met a few times for beers and food. 3 of us are all keen golfers and decided to have a round at the Playitas Golf centre, which is part of the wider Playitas sporting and training complex. Considering where the course is I think the fairways and greens were decent. A cracking afternoon was had by all.

It was a good job we hired some buggies for the round as walking up and down this course, along with the heat would have been horrendous.

These are 10 images from about 100 that took on the holiday, mainly with my Fuji but some with my iPhone15 ProMax. There will be a book of a wider selection of images but that will be posted in a subsequent blog.
