Fountains Abbey – What a Wonderful Place

We decided that this near years eve we weren’t going to go out to a pub or a club etc but instead would have a day out somewhere, and have food and drink back at the house later. Where to go, what was the weather going to be like? Both questions very pertinent, but I have renewed my National Trust membership so it seemed sensible to look at one of their sites. The weather was going to be poor wherever we went, so Fountains Abbey was the selection. I’ve been a long time ago, maybe as far back as when I was about 10 years old…….. thats a long time ago.

The journey there was lovely through the hills, we went via the A56, M65 and A59 heading for Harrogate before I needed to consult the satnav, and we found it no problem, it was busy but I guess that was to be expected. The membership really paid off as it would have been £18 each entry without the membership. Even Charlie was allowed on site with only a few areas where dogs were not allowed. Here are a few images that I think capture the essence of the Abbey.

It was a dull dreary day and there was absolutely no light whatsoever, but despite this I really enjoyed wandering around taking images of the whole place, and we were there for around 4 hours. The one great takeaway from this type of photography is that shutter speed is all important when handholding and using manual mode. Slow shutter speeds can lead to blurry images, no matter how still you think you are whilst taking the images.
